Our Approach

The architectural approach of the Stargazing Eco Cabin works to infuse contemporary elements with local examples of architectural typologies, such as the traditional slab huts that can be found dotted around Berrima and the wider Southern Highlands.  Carefully blending timeless rustic forms of the Australian landscape with modern convenience. Clever use of space allows guests to disconnect and enjoy the space as a couple, group, or family, with flexible spaces to grow and contract as needed. Inviting guests to establish a personal connection with the rural landscape. Overall, the project works to holistically deliver a luxury experience that is both practical and sustainable while establishing a sense of place to provide an entirely unique destination.

The Eco in Eco Cabin

Sustainability is at the heart of the Stargazing Eco Cabin's design and delivery; the project employs a tailored approach that ensures a deep connection between craftsmanship and materiality. Working closely with the owner, the tailor-made cabin was crafted from locally sourced materials like stone, timber, and traditional building methods. A louvred awning helps to control solar penetration and maximise natural ventilation; increased wall thickness provides improved insulation for year-round comfort. The small building footprint minimises the impact on the ground and long-term impacts on the landscape. Dedicated to sustainable living, the project puts high value on native bush regeneration to preserve the natural beauty of the site and work as the most beautiful background to the cabin. While a freestanding solar array and large rainwater tanks provide all the necessities through renewable resources.

Cabin Design

Designed for weekend getaways and to provide opportunities to disconnect and recharge the soul, it was important to the client and us to offer a unique experience. The area gives this uniqueness in abundance, as you first journey through the historic township of Berrima and continue until the roads give way to the weathered gravel and you pass through a gum tree forest before arriving at a clearing that gives the first glimpse of the Cabin. The cabin itself is first of all a shelter, a place to rest and survey the panoramic views over the landscape. The cabin expands its small footprint into this landscape through the use of a generous deck to the north and incorporates the practicalities of tiny home living with a kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities. The spaces have been designed to be flexible, allowing not just couples but groups and families to enjoy the space and then overall experience.

As the day comes to a close, the nighttime experience leads guests to imagine spiritual meaning as they observe the abundant star constellations on offer. The bedroom, positioned on the upper levels, provides uninterrupted views of the night sky and a dedicated observatory, elevating this experience by adding a sense of joy and adventure as you traverse up to this area. The cabin's orientation maximises natural light, offering a bright and curated interior. The Blade wall provides a structural robustness that separates the internal spaces and houses all the servicing needs, such as a laundry, storage space and an outdoor BBQ. Its outward layout encourages a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, blurring boundaries and inviting the guests to experience the natural environment all around them to provide a unique, aesthetic, and efficient escape.
