Our Projects

Explore our most recent projects, each a story of the architectural journey. We celebrate both the big ideas and the small details that make each space unique. Discover how we bring concepts to life, creating spaces that resonate with their surroundings and the people who call them home. Each project is a testament to our commitment to excellence, innovation, and sustainability, reflecting our deep understanding of the built environment.

A new master bedroom was proposed to the west, reconfiguring this area to create an ensuite and walk in robe for the master bedroom. The existing kitchen has been modified to create a good-sized laundry, dedicating the existing laundry to be used as the mudroom for the house. The existing unused entry has become a light filled study area with new skylights and windows to replace the existing entry door, that will give greater usability to the house. It was proposed that the existing house is reroofed, and the glazed doors and windows are to be replaced with double glazed units, improving the thermal performance considerably. A pool and spa were built to the north of the house with a level entertaining space within the pool area. The floor level of the additions was set to look over the pool fencing for an unobstructed view to the natural bushland beyond. To the east of the pool, a pool pavilion was constructed that will provide good access from the pool as well as additional office spaces and overflow guest accommodation for the main house. Sustainable Design is the underlying philosophy for all our projects at AO Design Studio. House Woodlands is an exemplar project for this philosophy. For any alterations and additions, we see so much value in the existing building, the most sustainable approach is to find a way to work with the existing fabric and give it a new lease of life, as this carries so much embodies energy. That is just what we looked to do for this project, the existing house has been updated with new double-glazed windows and doors, improved insulation and airtightness creating a much-improved thermal envelope. The additions were carefully designed to maximise passive solar heat gain throughout winter while blocking any excess heat in summer, as seen below. The use of a burnished concrete slab allows for the retention of this heat and its slow release throughout the evening, reducing the need for any additional heating sources.

House Woodlands

House Woodlands

A contemporary addition to an existing 1970’s brick homestead on a large parcel of land within Woodlands, NSW. AO created an addition that complemented the existing dwelling but offered the amenities and spaces to suit a modern lifestyle and a growing family.

Our architectural approach followed an axial design with spaces arranged around central corridors that are met with glazing and views beyond as well as simplifying the internal circulation, making it easier for people to age in place. For a project where we do not personally know the future resident, we instead aim to create spaces that are highly functional but flexible so people can make it their own and call it home. Using natural materials like timber flooring and stone, we bridge traditional charm with contemporary design, ensuring each home offers a sense of familiarity. Large windows and outdoor areas extend living spaces, blurring the line between the built and natural environment, and promoting a lifestyle that is suited to the local context.
