Tamsin Mehmel

Born and raised in the captivating landscapes of Western Cape, South Africa, and later finding inspiration in the beautiful New Zealand scenery, Tamsin’s designer’s journey spans continents and has taken root in the enchanting Southern Highlands. A profound passion for interior design led to academic pursuits in New Zealand culminating the attainment of a Bachelor of Architecture with a specialised focus on Interior Design and subsequently, evolving into achieving distinction in a Master of Interior Architecture degree at the Victoria University of Wellington. Tamsin’s personal influence derives from the relationship between art, diverse cultures, and the feeling of home. Dedication to combining these elements into designs ensures each project narrative is a seamless blend of aesthetics and cultural richness. Beyond conventional four walls, interiors are perceived as dynamic extensions of the surrounding landscape, where form, function, and ambiance converge to create an immersive experience. Tamsin believes that a home is a poetic expression of a family’s identity with a beautiful interplay between design and lived experiences, telling the unique story of each client, that it is a privilege to contribute to the creation of spaces where these moments unfold, are celebrated, and eternally cherished.

A Research-Based Approach to Design

During her postgraduate studies, Tamsin’s fifth-year design thesis focused on how interior design can help reduce anxiety at home through the use of art, light, materiality and symbolism. To fully explore these concepts, she created a public art installation, studying the psychological impact of different design elements on individuals. This research informed a theoretical residential design proposal, which was awarded the prestigious Artichoke Design Communication Award in 2021.

This deep exploration into the emotional and sensory impact of space and design has had a lasting influence on Tamsin’s work, reinforcing her belief that interiors should do more than just look beautiful, they should enhance well-being and create a sense of sanctuary.

Philosophy and Inspiration

Tamsin draws inspiration from the relationship between art, diverse cultures and the essence of home. She believes that interiors should be seen as dynamic extensions of their surroundings, where form, function and ambiance come together to create immersive and meaningful experiences. Her dedication to weaving these elements into her designs ensures that each project tells a unique and deeply personal story, blending aesthetics with cultural richness.

She finds joy in the details that transform a space, whether through the selection of materials that bring warmth and texture, the use of natural light to shape mood, or the thoughtful placement of objects that evoke emotion and connection.

Beyond Design

Outside of her professional work, Tamsin is passionate about literature, film and music, often drawing creative energy from the arts. She has a keen interest in cricket, a sport that reflects her appreciation for strategy, precision and teamwork, values she applies to her approach to design. She is also an avid cook, fascinated by the kitchen as both a functional and creative space, a perspective that informs her meticulous approach to designing beautiful and highly practical kitchens.

A Personal and Lasting Vision

Tamsin believes that a home is a poetic expression of identity, a place where design and life intertwine to create spaces filled with meaning and memory. She considers it a privilege to shape environments where moments unfold, are celebrated and eternally cherished. Through a combination of thoughtful detailing, cultural sensitivity and an innate understanding of space, she strives to create interiors that resonate deeply with those who inhabit them, ensuring that each project is as unique and personal as the people it serves.
